Yoga clothes should be comfortable and functional. They should allow you to move freely and not distract you from your practice. They should feel good against your skin so they don’t cause any irritation.

Ideally, the clothing should be absorbent so that it wicks sweat away from your body. There are few things that feel as uncomfortable as a sticky, clammy body that is moist from perspiration.

I also think they should be attractive and fun to wear. When I do yoga alone in my home, I am willing to wear an old tee shirt and sweats or baggy shorts. When I practice in a class, I am more discriminating in what I choose to wear.

I admit it. I work very hard to keep my body in shape, and when I am with others, I want to show off the efforts of my hard work. I usually choose form fitting pants and a fitted tee shirt. This allows me to see the outline of my body in the mirror so I can maintain good form, and it lets me move without having to fuss with my clothes. They are also flattering to my body, so when I wear them I feel good.

Here are some of the things that you should look for in yoga clothing so that they work well for you and make you feel good about yourself and your practice.

Yoga PantsThere are many types of yoga pants. Some are long and go down to your ankles; others stop just below your knees. Often they are relatively form fitting. These types of pants have the benefit of allowing your instructor to see your alignment so she can make any necessary adjustments to your form.

If you aren’t comfortable in pants that are so revealing, you might enjoy wearing loose, cotton trousers. They offer freedom of movement without being too tight.

Whatever pants you choose, make sure that you can bend and move freely in them. Also be sure that there are no bulky ties at the waist that might be uncomfortable when you are lying in a prone position.

Yoga ShortsYoga shorts are a very good choice if you practice Bikram or hot yoga, because the room is heated to such a high temperature. They also help you more easily check the proper alignment of your lower body because you can see your knees and ankles.

JacketMany people might not think that a jacket is an important part of yoga clothing, but I beg to disagree. I think it is absolutely critical to take a jacket with you to your yoga class. I have been in many classes where the temperature has been quite cool (some are downright freezing). While the temperature often doesn’t matter too much while I am moving during the poses, it becomes quite a different story when the time comes to meditate.

I don’t know about you, but I find it difficult if not impossible, to relax when I am cold. Bringing a jacket with you gives you an option of covering up during the relaxation period if you are feeling chilly. Feeling warm and comfortable allows you the pleasure of letting your body relax fully.

When it comes to the art of giving, a gift of clothes is fraught with peril. We all have stories to tell, and if you don't, you will. Just give it time.

Mine started early. My grandmother, having survived the Depression, knew how to stretch a dollar. Clothes for her grandkids were always purchased 3 or 4 sizes too big so we could "grow into them". And she passed this charming trait on to my mother. So, we endured our baggy clothes, with the sleeves and pant legs rolled up, until we were finally big enough to wear them with dignity. By which time they were ready for donation.

Then there's my husband. Heaven forbid I should try to give the man a Polo shirt with an uneven hemline. Most Polos are made longer in the back to help them stay "tucked", but hubby goes un-tucked -- always. He rejects any polo that breaks the rule, no matter how subtly. For an otherwise easy-going guy, his behavior is almost perverse.

If you must give clothes this season, there's one giftee on your list who's sure to look great in any outfit you buy him. He'll wear your gift with pride and appreciation, head held high and tail wagging.

That's right, your dog. Or your best friend's dog. It's so easy you'll wonder why you didn't think of it before.

Got a mischievous sense of humor? Making the baby look silly might be a no-no, but it's good clean fun when it comes to dressing up a dog. There are some really creative doggie costume out there that are good for a chuckle or two.

There's really only a couple of rules you'll need to keep in mind when shopping for dog clothes: One is that if the dog in question is an avid chewer, you should avoid buying him anything tempting. Shiny buttons, fringe, and feathers are examples that come to mind. An object that can easily be chewed off and swallowed is a choking hazard and can get stuck in the dog's digestive tract.

The other rule is that any dog, no matter how tolerant, will be more comfortable wearing clothes that fit. Proper fit typically requires measuring from the dog's collar to the base of her tail for length. Most garment's girth can be adjusted with velcro tabs, but could still be an issue with a barrel-chested breed such as a bulldog. Measurements are typically in inches.

Remember that a dog will never "diet down" into an outfit that's too small , or -- unless you're shopping for a puppy or a pregnant female -- "grow into" an item that's too big. (Sorry, Grandma.)

Oh, and one more thing--if you're handy with a sewing machine, you can make your own dog clothes creations. Just don't forget to include an opening for the dog to relieve himself. Don't laugh, it happens a lot!
Now, if you're shopping for your own dog, you're all set. But if you're buying clothes for someone else's dog, I've got a few more tips for you.

Surveys conducted on the subject of gift preferences of men and women have shown that men prefer gifts that are more playful or practical. So, if the dog's owner is male this might translate into a doggie Harley jacket, a funny costume, or a reflective hunting vest (more on practical clothing in another article!).

Women, on the other hand, prefer gifts that are beautiful, memorable, and personal. It shouldn't be hard to find an item of clothing for a woman's dog that's either beautiful or memorable or both, and it will of course be personal!

Exception: if the woman is someone you don't know well. The more distant the relationship between giver and receiver, the riskier it is to give a personal gift. So, be they man or woman, if you don't know the dog owner very well, you probably shouldn't be buying dog clothes for their pet.

Of course and this could save lives in our military and it makes a lot of sense.

Now then in the future these technologies will be transferred into the public sector, in fact currently some of these technologies really are. In the future consumers will be able to buy adaptive clothing just like the military will have. Imagine if you could match your friends clothes and blend into your surroundings. Indeed some may want to be loud and attract attention and in this case your clothes would pick a color that was not in the room and then go for that instead. No more accidentally wearing the same dress at a party. Consider all this in 2006.

Washing clothes is very important for personal hygiene. Yet it is also a chore that some tend to ignore. One, which may not be our favorite household obligation to have to do, sure we love to have clean clothes, bed sheets and towels, but washing the clothes is a time consuming hassle. Soon you will not have to worry about this anymore. No, I am not suggesting you go out and get an illegal alien domestic maid to help, as that would pretty much rule out your possible confirmation to the Supreme Court wouldn’t it and make your appointer look silly too no doubt. Well then you ask, how can I get my clothes to wash themselves?

You see your clothes washer and dryer already do this, but you have to monitor theses appliances, load them, switch the clothes and then fold them all, as you smell each one for that freshness you are looking for? Don’t deny it! You may as well call Tide to do their next commercial the way you smell all your clean clothes.

What you need is a household robot to take your clothes separate them by color, fabric and take them to the wash room and load them and hang out there playing some really cool music, while it monitors the washer and dryer for you. You see creating a robot, which can go to a clothes hamper and collect the clothes and sort them and then throw them into a washing machine is not a difficult task considering all the robotic achievements of our present period. Clothes Woes

Shopping for new clothes is not my favorite pastime. But shopping is a way of life for my wife. She shops every day, looking for bargains, buying from one store and taking something back to another. When I need something from a store, I make a note of what I need, go to the store, buy it, and never take it back. After all, I needed it, didn’t I?

My wife holds up a shirt and asks me how I like it. I notice that there is no pocket for my glasses, the sleeves have no wrist band to keep them off my hands and it's pink. In her mind, she sees me wearing it in front of her pals, me looking fashionable and well-off. She is thinking of how it will go with certain new slacks I have home that I have never worn and how good an impression that little crocodile on the chest will make at the next picnic.

For me, function rules over fashion. Quality impresses me more than color and comfort stands above all else. My wife's gurus are: what is in style this season, how chic will it make me look and can it be returned without fuss. When jeans first came to fashion, I fought wearing them for years. They felt stiff, unyielding in a bend and were hot in the summer. Not until they made stretch jeans of a softer material would I condescend to wear them - and then only for working around the house. My wife's main criterion for choosing a pair of jeans for me concerned how good my butt looked from the back, how near to Clint Eastwood would I compare and where could she hide them so that I wouldn't wear them working on the car. I'm sure her thoughts ran to frustration if not downright unkind as she perused the ten pair of slacks hanging in my closet with the knees blown out and spots on the fronts. I can't help it if I have to dress up nicely for work but am required to spend a lot of time on my knees photographing babies.

Once, as we dressed for a night out, I donned my wife's latest fashion find. Over a mock turtle necked sweater, thin, pearl gray gaberdine slacks with sewn closed side pockets were paired with a navy blue Nehru jacket, stylishly without inside pockets at all. I called out, "I'm ready", as she appeared in the bedroom doorway. Around me in a circle on the floor lay a pearl gray handkerchief, my allergy medicine, a chapstick, my wallet and car keys! All of which dropped straight to the floor as I tried to place them in my usual pockets.

Are Maternity Clothes Necessary in Order to Look Good During Pregnancy?

I remember my mother telling me about the times when she was pregnant. She was wearing nothing more than my father’s jeans and his working shirts throughout her pregnancy. No maternity clothes for her because she was too poor to buy them at that time. Remember, in her time, which was about 30 years back, maternity clothes used to cost a bomb.

And yet, if you walk along any shopping center these days, you’ll notice at least three or four maternity clothes fashion houses catering to the specifically ‘large’ needs of a pregnant mother. And since the web and the Internet is such a magnanimous thing these days, what about online maternity stores? I’d safely say there are just about half a million legitimate maternity stores right now flailing around the Internet wires for business.

And the amazing thing is that…YES, they make money! And why, I was wondering.
Because of one simple thing….even though my mother (like your mother) and my grandmother (and your grandmother) didn’t need maternity clothes when they were pregnant, the modern generation of pregnant women really, truly DO need maternity clothes. We’re living in an era that is completely different from their time and we cannot compare our pregnancy needs with their needs. The same rules no longer apply.

If you’re pregnant right now and am sitting around here wondering if you should get yourself a whole new wardrobe of maternity clothes, you’re in luck. I have some tips about buying maternity clothes for you.

Buy good-looking maternity clothes that can last at least 3 pregnancies
Like I said, maternity clothes are not cheap these days and maternity clothes are only wearable for the nine months that you’re pregnant and maybe another month or two after that. And when you get back in shape, you’re going to have to shelve those expensive maternity clothes or put the maternity clothes in sad boxes with the edges stuck together with cellophane tape.
So, buy only maternity clothes that are classy and of exceptional quality. You wear maternity clothes only when you plan to go out. For casual outings and at home, stick to your extra large clothes or perhaps, you can buy some large sweaters, t-shirts, overalls, or raglan to wear when you’re not required to look all-that-presentable. It works!

You won’t need CASUAL maternity clothes. In my books, that’s an oxymoron.
Maternity clothes that can double up as breastfeeding clothes later on would be good too
If you intend to breastfeed your baby after the whole pregnancy is over, you would have to think about buying MORE clothes…breastfeeding/nursing clothes. Now, as with maternity clothes, nursing clothes don’t come cheap either. And do we NEED nursing clothes as much as we need maternity clothes? Yes, sometimes we do. I have quite a few fashionable looking nursing clothes that I wear whenever I go out shopping or meeting up with friends. Other times, I wear my t-shirts with holes cut out for easy access to the breast! Yeah, it’s funny, but at home, who’s going to care?
And if you can get your hands on some good maternity clothes that can double up as nursing clothes later on, GO FOR IT! You will get your money’s worth that way.

Style of maternity clothes
Many maternity clothes designers are asleep when they’re designing maternity clothes – the selection is bad. Most of them are nothing but flower after flower, spiral after spiral, safety pins or perhaps some form of teddy bear or another. Forget about them! If you were to buy maternity clothes, invest one that makes you look good. If the maternity clothes are plain, that’s fine, it’s better than making you look like Bozo – most of them do, by the way.

The point is that you want to look CLASSY and DIGNIFIED even though you’re sort of….BIG. and wearing maternity clothes with large orange and yellow flower prints is NOT going to help you do that!
That’s just my opinion, of course, and you’re entitled to have your own opinion about maternity clothes that looks good.

Organizing Baby Clothes

When I first found out we were expecting twins, I had no idea how we were going to able to afford enough clothes for both of them! Two baby showers later, I had more baby clothes than I knew what to do with, and I was struggling with trying to find somewhere to organize everything.

I received as gifts many different sizes of baby clothes, from newborn all the way to toddler. Friends and family members who found out we were expecting also gave us many nice hand-me-downs. I quickly realized I wasn't going to have to buy any clothes for our boys for quite some time! After looking over all the clothing, I decided it would be easiest to organize the clothes by sizes.

I first washed everything and sorted all the clothing by sizes. I then went to Walmart and bought some very inexpensive large plastic storage containers to store larger sizes.

The boys have two dressers in their bedroom. I filled one dresser with newborn size clothes, and the other dresser with size 3-6 months. I then labeled three plastic storage containers 6-9 months, 9-12 months, and 18-24 months. After sorting all the clothes I organized the storage containers on a shelf in the bedroom closet. Now whenever I get new clothing I can go right to the storage container with the correct size. This system has made it very easy for me to see what I have on hand and what I still need to buy.

Hang Your Diapers on an Indoor Clothes Drying Rack

One of the worst energy consumers in your house is the dryer. In fact 58 billion kilowatt-hours of electricity are used in clothes dryers annually. But if you are washing cloth diapers at home it is a given that you must also dry them right? Well, in the summer months it may be an obvious choice to rely on "solar" power and hang your diapers (and other clothing) on the line outside.

But what about those cloudy, rainy, or snowy days when hanging diapers outside is not practical? The answer may be an indoor clothes drying rack. These are very similar to outdoor racks but they are designed specifically for indoor use. Often times they are placed in a garage, laundry room or bathroom and while some can be attached permanently to your home many portable options are available. You might even take a more frugal leap and make one yourself. Mother Earth News magazine has directions online for making one here.

Perhaps you could put the diapers on an indoor rack until they are almost dry and then use the dryer (on hottest setting) to finish drying and to sanitize the diapers. This would help you save 75% of the energy you would use otherwise.
Other Diaper Laundering, Energy Saving Tips:

Clothes the door to your laundry room in the summer to keep the heat from entering the rest of the house. In the winter, do the opposite and keep the door open.

Don't overload the dryer. Overloading doesn't allow ample space for the clothes to tumble and they will take longer to dry.
Purchase a front-load washer. Front-loading washers leave less water in your clothes than top-load washers meaning your dryer doesn't have to work as hard.

Clear lint from the lint tray before you use the dryer each time. Proper air flow will cut down the drying time, as well as wear and tear on the dryer and your clothes.

Ready-to-wear apparel is great. You can walk in a store, try it on, and if it fits your body and budget, you can take it home right then. It sure beats the heck out of taking the time to make it yourself or hiring someone to custom-make something, right?
Maybe, maybe not.

If clothes shopping for you is an ongoing exercise in frustration because of your too-long legs, an odd fabric allergy, size-defiant proportions or whatever, maybe it's time to pass the mall and head to a custom clothier instead. For not only will you get to choose your own fabrics and trims, you'll also get clothes that fit correctly regardless of whatever figure challenge you present.

Now I know what you may be thinking: "That's too expensive."
But chances are, it's not. If you add up the cost of buying clothes and paying to have them altered, or buying a special size by mail order and paying to have it shipped, or even burning time and gas to run all over town looking for something that fits, you may find that you'll spend less time and money having something custom made. I encourage you to do the math.

Now if you still think that custom apparel is a bit extravagant, consider this: men's ready-to-wear clothing has been around for nearly two hundred years - since before the sewing machine came along in the 1850's -- but women's ready-to-wear has only been widely available since the 1920's. Why? Because back when women wore corsets, manufacturers had trouble creating clothes that fit! It wasn't until the loose-fitting straight silhouettes became popular in the 20's that manufacturers could profit from selling women's ready-to-wear clothes. So what did women do before that? They either sewed their own clothes or had them custom made.

So who should consider having her clothes custom made? I suggest you try a custom clothier if you:
*Routinely have to have your clothes altered to fit correctly.
*Have trouble getting certain types of garments to fit, like tops, skirts, or slacks.
*Have special requirements, like fabric allergies, medical issues (wheelchair bound, arthritis/can't fasten buttons), or post-surgical needs.
*Need a special occasion ensemble, gown, or costume.

Tween Scene – No More Kids Clothes?

Shopping for kids clothes is, if not fun, at least a relatively painless parental task. All a parent needs to know to buy clothes is the child’s age and favorite over-commercialized cartoon character. He then need only buy something with that age printed on the tag – 2T for a two-year old, 6X for a tall six-year old – bearing the appropriate Elmo or Dora the Explorer images. Not a flawless system, but one that has stood the transition from shopping moms to shopping, clueless dads like me. However, this system starts to unravel as your child approaches the tween years – generally recognized as the ages between nine and twelve. The tween years are similar to the toddler years in that your child feels the need to assert independence, test limits, and even push a few buttons. But there is the added confusion of raging hormones causing body changes, mood swings, and occasional fits of pique. At this age, clothing not only fits differently due to growth (and those darn hormones), but your young person begins to have a sense of his own style, or at least a sense of what his peers are wearing. No more Rugrats, Blue’s Clues, or Barbie clothing themes. No more kids clothes.

What will my kids want to wear?
Tweens begin feeling the need to express their independence from their parents by emulating their peers. It’s the prelude to full-blown teenager-hood, and as such, fashion plays a role. However, fashion and popular culture should never override parental wisdom, or common sense. Do we really need to see an eleven-year-old boy’s boxers billowing out of his low-slung pants like the braking chute on a drag racer? Should we really know what color underwear a ten year old girl is wearing as it climbs over the top of her jeans? Tweens will look to teens, and teen pop icons, for what’s “cool” to wear, and in so doing will see a proliferation of skin and undergarments. Leaving aside the issue of whether this attire is appropriate for anyone, these are definitely not kids clothes. Yet they may very possibly be the clothes your kids will want to wear.

No kids clothes? What should I buy?
Fear not, all is not lost! The aware parent can be fashion-forward and still lose the “babyish” kids clothes. Today’s tween/teen fashion seems to be centered on baggy and low slung, with an eye to 80’s Prep. Plain white tee shirts are popular for both boys and girls, as are polo shirts (yes, the collars are back up!). Loose fitting cargo pants, jeans, khakis and chinos are also worn by both girls and boys. Many of today’s jeans are low-rise, which means parents need to keep an eye out for peeping underwear and “plumber’s cleavage,” but the right fit can be found. As silk scarf belts are in for girls, obtaining this accessory for your daughter might help keep the jeans up at their proper height. Popular with boys is the silk (or silk-like) shirt over that white tee. Untucked, this also can help disguise pants that seem to be hanging at knee level. One way young ladies can be “skin-fashionable” without being inappropriate is by wearing Capri pants coupled with the ped-like “no-see” socks that don’t rise above the tops of the sneaker. Showing a little ankle may have been risqué in Queen Victoria’s day, but in today’s Britney Spears boobs-and-bellies world, the ankle is an easy compromise. These socks are also worn by boys, so stock up.

What’s this going to cost me?
Let’s face it - fashion can be expensive. And if my tween is going to be growing out of her clothes in three months, outfitting her could become prohibitively expensive. Fortunately, part of the problem is solved by the fashion itself. White tees, ankle-height socks, and even polo shirts are relatively inexpensive, and can be purchased at Target or Wal-Mart. However, some of the retailers that are offering these trendy kids clothes are on the higher end of the pricing scale. Abercrombie, American Eagle, Old Navy, and Gap are on the frontlines of kids clothes fashion, and are more expensive. It’s best for the budget-conscious parent to pick a few pieces of “anchor” clothing from these places that can be accessorized or added to from discount stores.

Remember: You are the parent
As your child grows out of her kids clothes and into tween clothes, remember who is in charge. A tween is yet a child, and needs parental guidance and supervision. You decide what is or is not appropriate attire. And, unless your tween has a high-end, low-carb, no-sugar lemonade bar, you are probably the one paying for the clothes. You can allow your young person to grow and express herself within your parameters, and make the transition out of kids clothes a smooth one.
